Groups Lament Delay in Tobacco Control Bill Passage

While applauding the Lagos State House of Assembly for recently passing the bill banning smoking in public places in the state, some groups have solicited the same speedy feat to be repeated at the federal level where the National Tobacco Control Bill (NTCB) is yet to be given the requisite attention and pride of place.

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) and Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) presented a joint statement to the media on the urgency for the lawmakers at the national level to prioritise the health and wellness of the citizens by speeding up work on the Bill to make it law. They also advised the lawmakers to put aside party sentiments and personal ambitions in order to confront a common challenge, which the tobacco menace poses to the nation.
For them, the visibility that British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) intended to create by ingratiating with elected representatives is proof that the company is unrelenting in its ploy to pull wool over the eyes of Nigerians. The company, it said  is now oiling its so-called corporate social responsibility initiatives which are to effectively thwart legislation that would regulate the marketing, sale and product of its lethal products in Nigeria.
“The passage of the tobacco control bill and its implementation will save us from further deaths and the health complications of the young generation. In all ramifications, the bill will be a vital legislation to hold the tobacco companies accountable for their deception,” it he added.
Chronicling the state of the bill which have passed the first and second reading and is awaiting  public hearing after  work is done by the Joint Committee on Justice and Health,  the  Director, Corporate Accountability, ERA/FoEN, Mr. Akinbode Oluwafemi  announced that everyone is awaiting the fast tracking in the mode of the legislation, adding that efforts should  be made for the legislators to be weary of the antics employed by the tobacco companies which is meant to stall any of such bills from becoming law. For him, Nigeria is obligated by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) which Nigeria signed in 2004 to domesticate those provisions of the bill which are to: ban all tobacco adverts and promotion, hundred percent smoke-free policies, ban of sales to minors, taxation issues and improvement on several other measures like education and public awareness etc.
“We’ve seen a lot of African countries initiating tobacco control laws. Every country is now moving to protect their citizens from the hazards of tobacco smoking. Nigeria is the last frontier for tobacco control on the continent, the last war front. There is no cigarette manufacturing plant again almost across the West African belt. They are having them in Nigeria. It’s no doubt that the industry is putting the most outrageous efforts. For them, the market is huge and the backlash is also huge on both sides. If Nigeria gets it right, the entire region will get it right,” he stated.
Further acknowledging the various efforts made by different state governments in putting up laws to protect citizens in their various states and constituencies, the co-ordinator, Coalition Against Tobacco, Onaolapo Olatoyosi in her  remarks complained on why such pragmatic actions isn’t felt at the federal level. Reeling out the various actions by their group at the federal level which dates back to 2006, Olatoyosi noted that it was unfortunate that a lot of politics had come first against the health and lives of the masses.

Half of Donor Lungs Come From Smokers: Fifth Are From People With 20-a-Day Habits

One in five lung transplant patients are given organs from 20-a-day smokers, research has  revealed.
Overall, almost a half of donated lungs come from someone who had smoked, according to a major  British study.
Using lung transplants from smokers is a way of boosting supply as there is a constant shortage of donor organs.
But for one in five patients, their donors had smoked a packet a day or more for at least 20 years.
Despite this, the researchers said patients' survival rate  was not harmed by receiving  a smoker's lung and the research should ease patients' fears about donors who had smoked.
The study showed that patients who received lungs from non-smokers actually had a slightly lower one-year survival rate. The research was carried out at Harefield Hospital in north-west London.

Teenage Boy With Virus That Cause Disabilities in Unborn Babies

A teenager is being forced to attend an all-boys school because he is dangerous to women - at least if they're pregnant.
Bryant Hackett, 14, has been diagnosed with cytomegalovirus (CMV) and has been told by medics he is to avoid close contact with expectant women for the foreseeable future.
Although the virus is not causing Bryant to suffer any symptoms, it could be harmful if contracted by a pregnant woman.

He is even unable to have any contact with his sister Terri Wooton, 20, who is expecting a baby in a few weeks’ time.
Bryant, of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, said: ‘I miss my sister a lot and can’t wait until she gives birth. She is due in a few weeks.’
Bryant was diagnosed with the virus in July of last year after a rare strain of hepatitis he believes he picked up while on holiday in Majorca left him with a catalogue of health problems.

It caused him to develop liver failure and end up a with a blood platelet count of just four – the normal level is between 150 and 400.
He suffered bone marrow failure and had to have two bone marrow transplants which first required him to have chemotherapy to clear his existing bone marrow.
He was left with a weakened immune system, which caused him to contract pneumonia which his mother says almost killed him.
After undergoing the bone marrow transplants last year, he spent five months in isolation in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, receiving chemotherapy.
Following his recovery, he had been due to start at a co-ed school.
However, after doctors told him he was suffering from CMV, which is harmful to unborn babies, he has been forced to attend a boys-only school instead.

CMV is a common virus that is part of the herpes family of viruses.
It causes few symptoms in most people and so most do not know they are infected.
Once someone has been infected, the virus stays in their body for the rest of their life without usually causing problems.

However, it can sometimes cause symptoms if a person has a weakened immune system, for example, if they are having chemotherapy.
CMV can also cause serious problems if a woman becomes infecting during pregnancy as this can lead to hearing loss and learning difficulties in the baby.

Does even Diet Coke make you FAT? Sugar-free fizzy drinks make people eat more food

Many dieters opt for sugar-free drinks in a bid to shed some excess pounds, but new research suggests this tactic is not effective.
U.S. researchers found that overweight and obese adults who drink diet fizzy drinks consume more calories from food than those who drink regular fizzy drinks.
The researchers, at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, examined national patterns in adult drink consumption and calorie intake.

They discovered that those who opt for diet drinks do not end up consuming fewer calories overall.
‘Although overweight and obese adults who drink diet soda eat a comparable amount of total calories as heavier adults who drink sugary beverages, they consume significantly more calories from solid food at both meals and snacks,’ said Dr Sara Bleich, associate professor with the Bloomberg School’s Department of Health Policy and Management and lead author of the paper.

Mother, 36 Struk By Lightening By The Beach

A mother was killed in front of her family when she was struck by lightning on a Brazilian beach.
Rosangela Biavati a 36-year-old married mother of one, died instantly when she was hit by the bolt of electricity during a trip to Guaruja, a popular seaside resort on the coast of Sao Paulo.

The first photograph shows the victim heading towards the water with outstretched arms as she warns her 11-year-old son to get out of the sea because of the gathering storm overhead. The next image captures the electrical discharge streaking down.

A Mitsubishi pickup obscures the moment the bolt hits the woman as she steps towards the water’s edge but the tragic outcome is clearly evident in the following image in the sequence of shots.
Three men, including the victim’s husband who is wearing white swimming trucks, drag her lifeless body onto the beach.

Woman At 35, Who Drinks 40 Cans Of Beer Daily Drinks To Death Bed

These shocking images show the damage alcohol can do to the body - even at a very young age.
Mother-of-four Beverley Pickorer faces certain death from liver disease as a result of years of heavy drinking.
The 35-year-old is plagued by epileptic seizures, her teeth are rotting, her stomach is swollen and her skin is thin and jaundiced.
Now, her distraught partner Anthony Howard, 31, is pleading for her to be allowed to return to her home in Sheffield to die.

If he is being denied his wish, she will spend her last days being nursed around the clock at Haythorne Place Care Home, in Shiregreen.
Ms Pickorer has been drink-dependent for years and at her worst was downing up to 24 cans of lager plus a bottle of perry - pear cider - in the morning, then visiting the pub, then drinking as many as 16 cans when she returned home.

Her four children have all been taken into care.
She has spent the last eight months receiving palliative care in the home, where most other residents are elderly. Before that, she spent four months in hospital.
‘I've been looking after my partner for five-and-a-half years, and she's constantly been in and out of hospital with liver cirrhosis,’ said Mr Howard.

Five babies delivered at ongoing Holy Ghost Congress

Mrs. Ruth Kehinde Posu, 25, leaves at New Site around Festac Town in Lagos.
She is a member of Living Faith Ministry aka Winners Chapel and was particularly keen on going the current convention of the church at Ota because there was no money for such a venture.
She was nine-month pregnant but had no inkling of how the baby would be born as there was no money even to buy the initial required baby things.
Somehow, she followed some persons to the ongoing Holy Ghost Congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of God where she was delivered of a bouncing baby boy, yesterday. The baby weighed 3 kg.
Mrs Posu is one of the five women who had been delivered of babies during this Holy Ghost Congress.
Narrating her story yesterday, the 25-year-old lady expressed gratitude to the church leaders and particularly the nurses who took her in without even baby pants.
The story of Mrs. Tubi Omolara, 28, was also very intriguing. She travelled from Akute in Ogun State with an abounding faith in God to deliver safely after she had been told by three other doctors that her baby was too big to deliver normally.
She said: All hospitals, I went to had only one verdict for me; and that my baby was too big and so I should prepare for a Caesarian session. Much as I want the baby, we were not preparing for a CS for several reasons.”
“So on Monday, the pain was becoming severe, I called my pastor and told him I won’t go for a CS and immediately he recommended that he would take me to the camp and at about 6.00 a.m. yesterday I was delivered of a baby boy.”
The baby weighed 4.5 kg to confirm the fears of the earlier doctors. Mrs. Omolara wishes to christen her baby, Oluwasegunfunmi (God had given me victory).
In unison, all the women paid glowing tributes to the staff and managers of the maternity home. They commended the vision of setting up a maternity in different parishes of the church were women go for anti-natal and delivery free of charge.

Teenager Who Cries And Sweat Blood, But Found LOve

A teenager suffers from a rare condition that causes her to cry and sweat blood.
Delfina Cedeno, 19, began suffering from the bizarre disorder - which also causes blood to seep from her fingernails and belly button - four years ago.
As her condition deteriorated, she started crying the red fluid, having nosebleeds and suffering hair loss.

At her worst, she has bled for up to 15 days and was once left in such a critical condition that she needed a blood transfusion.
But despite hundreds of tests, doctors in her hometown of Veron, in the Dominican Republic, were left baffled.
Miss Cedeno said: 'When this started happening to me I didn't know what to think - I was terrified and in complete shock.
'At first no one could help me and they looked at me like a crazy person when I told them what was going on.
'It was only when I started bleeding in front of a doctor one day that they began to take me seriously.'
She said: 'I wanted to die. My family found me in a heap in my bedroom with my mouth foaming. I ended up in intensive care for a week and when I woke up the doctors told me I had technically died.
'I'd gone into cardiac arrest and they had to give me electric shocks. There was a chance I might have lost the use of my limbs.
'But amazingly I recovered. And now I'm really glad because after that my life started to get better.'
A few months later she met her boyfriend, Recaris Avila, who paid her a visit in hospital after hearing her story.
She said: 'He said I was beautiful. I will remember that moment for the rest of my life.'
Now, four years after it all began, specialists have finally made a breakthrough.
It is thought Miss Cedeno suffers with a rare condition called hematidrosis, which means she has 20 times the level of adrenaline of a normal person.
The anxiety attacks it causes makes her blood pressure rise so severely that she sweats - and this sweat comes out of her body as blood.
The condition is extremely rare. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, the many blood vessels which surround the sweat gland constrict, or narrow, under the pressure of stress.
As the anxiety increases, the blood vessels dilate to the point of rupture. The blood goes into the sweat glands, which push it along with sweat to the surface, presenting as droplets of blood mixed with sweat.

The Footballer Without Any Feet

In one sense, Gabriel Muniz is just like most other boys his age - desperate to go outside and play football.
But, unlike his teammates, the 11-year-old from Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, does not have any feet.
He was born with a limb deficiency called apodia, which meant his feet did not develop. However, Gabriel was determined to walk.

After impressing family and friends with his ball skills, Gabriel also caught the eye of FC Barcelona - and was invited by the Spanish giants to a training camp to play against abled-bodied footballers.
That came following a trial at the football club's training academy in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro.

Last year, his best friend Lucas Santos spoke about his abilities to The Sun: 'He is skilful, he goes after it [the ball], he is fearless and he knows how to organise plays. He also makes good passes.'
Now a TV series is following the story of Gabriel's perseverance and sees him meeting his footballing hero Lionel Messi, the 26-year-old Argentine superstar.
In a previous interview, his mother said: 'He started walking before he was one. We would go after him, expecting him to keep falling, but he never fell.'
Gabriel's gym teacher Jose Lopes added: 'He is challenging the social norms. When he arrived there [at the Barcelona academy], no-one believed in him.
'But he proved to everyone there he can go head to head with any other boy. So much so that he was invited to go to Spain to showcase his talent.'
Gabriel is now determined to pursue his dream of becoming a professional player. He said: ‘The only thing I can't do is fly.’

Red Pepper Natural Pain killer.

Prof. Adesola Oguniyi a consultant Neurologist, on Wednesday in Lagos said that red pepper was a natural pain killer and an alternative to medication.
Prof. Oguniyi, who works with the University of Ibadan, said   that extracts gotten from red pepper were  very essential in pain relief.
Also “Studies have shown in some parts of the world that extracts from red pepper, especially the capsicum specie, can actually be used to treat pain.
“It is the extracts from the pepper which would have been processed in the laboratory that would be would be rubbed on the affected area.
He said that “It is also useful as a topical preparation; and when  applied ion the skin, initially, it burns, but after a while, the individual wouldn't feel the pain again.
According to Oguniyi, red pepper extract is safe for most people, although it is not supposed to be applied directly on open wounds or irritated areas.

According to him, the extracts can be applied on the affected areas of pains such as back pains, cluster headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, shingles and nerve pains due to diabetes.
Oguniyi encourages  researchers to work toward developing extracts from pepper in large quantity.
“We eat a lot of pepper here; we have pepper in abundance in our country; researchers should be able to come up with something efficacious in managing some painful conditions,’’ he said.

Butt Implant Ruining Women's Life In Venuzuela

A dangerous trend has seen more than a dozen women in Venezuela die from botched plastic surgeries involving injecting synthetic silicone into their buttocks.
At least 40,000 women in the South American nation have undergone a procedure where they have a gel-like substance called a synthetic biopolymer shot into the butt cheeks.
As opposed to a silicone implant, the synthetic substance flows like an injection and spreads uncontrollably through tissue, leading to deformities and sometimes death.

The original operation cost the equivalent of $800 (£498). Days later, she started feeling an intense pain. She has learned to live with it, as she has with stinging criticism from her family.
‘I ask God and the Virgin for forgiveness so I can get out of this. This is no way to live,’ she said, her eyes clenched shut.
Astrid de la Rosa, who underwent the same procedure only to see the gel migrate to her lower back and hips, created a support foundation in 2011.
It is called the ‘No to Biopolymers Foundation’ and has recorded 15 deaths so far from complications resulting from this beauty enhancing technique.
The foundation has knowledge of 40,000 people who opted for the procedure, and the number is growing even though in November of 2012 the Venezuelan government banned the use of use of stuffing-like materials such as the synthetic biopolymers for aesthetic purposes.
The authorities have brought charges against some doctors and beauticians who continue to offer the service.
‘There are even recent cases of parents who give their daughters the biopolymer butt and breast treatment for their 15th birthday and now they regret it,’ said De la Rosa.

The polymers migrated to muscles between his ribs, tightening his thorax and limiting his breathing. He’s been flat out in bed for two years.
‘I cannot do exercise. I cannot run. I am a living dead man,’ said Guerrero.
With his artificially toned up muscles, he said, people shun him in hospitals and treat him as if he were HIV-positive.
He went to one of two doctors known to be offering a technique to try to rid people of the stuff they pumped into themselves.
One is a Caracas plastic surgeon named Daniel Slobodianik. In the waiting room of his office it is standing room only.
He says that since 2011 he must have seen about 400 patients with this problem.
The legion of walking wounded in his clinic includes: a 60-year-old woman who can barely move she is in so much pain; two cousins who had the procedure done at the same time and while not yet smarting, are scared by what they are hearing; and a woman who is trying to get pregnant and is worrying what the silicone in her body might do to a fetus.

Resident doctors call off strike!

The President, National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr Jibril Abdullahi, said the nationwide strike by the association was suspended in the public interest, on Friday.
Abdullahi said this in an interview with  Journalists  in Abuja on Friday.
The association suspended its more than three-week long strike, which began on Oct. 1, after its National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
He made it clear that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the suspension of the strike was signed at the meeting between the leadership of the association and representatives of the Federal Government and labour.
“Our last discussion was on Monday Oct. 21; that was exactly three weeks after the start of the strike.
“The government made some concessions, although they did not meet the target of our members.
“We felt in the interest of what is happening in the country, namely: the outbreak of cholera in Lagos and Gusau; the outbreak of Lassa fever in Abakaliki, it was high time we soft-pedaled and allowed dialogue to continue, hoping that the government will play its own role in ensuring our agreement is implemented.
“The President and Commander-In-Chief has already mandated the Minister of Health and Minister of Finance to work together in resolving this impasse.
“We felt the commitment of the President is good enough for us to tell our members in the interest of the country, the health of our people, we should soft pedal and resume our duties.“
Dr Abdullahi said that the Federal Government constituted a task force to ensure the immediate payment of the funds released for the settlement of salary arrears owed its members in 15 hospitals across the country.
He added that an inter-ministerial committee on residency training would also be constituted to work toward a comprehensive residency training framework for the country.
Abdullahi called on patriotic Nigerians to take up the issue of residency training as a matter of national discourse which would help in transforming the health sector collectively.
He said: “Residency training is not only in our interest but first of all in the interest of the whole nation.
“So, we can ensure our country attains the level of expertise whereby we will end this waste of foreign exchange in the pursuit of medical tourism abroad.’’
The association went on strike over the non-payment of salary arrears of some doctors for over four months under the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) arrangement.
Some issues were the training and retraining of resident doctors and the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (NAN).

'Unprotected sex as a teenager has left me infertile': Bride-to-be, 21, heartbroken to learn why she couldn't conceive

A woman has spoken of the heartbreaking moment she was told she was infertile because she had unprotected sex with one partner as a teenager.
Jodie Watson, 21, was undergoing exploratory tests in hospital to find out why she and her fiancé had been unable to conceive a baby when she was given the devastating news that she may never be a mother.
She was stunned to be told her infertility had been caused by an STD she had contracted and been treated for as a teenager.

Now, as she struggles to raise money for IVF, Ms Watson has made the brave decision to talk about her heartbreak in the hope that it will stop other teenagers from repeating her mistake.
She said: ‘I was young and I made one foolish mistake that I will pay for forever.
‘That single mistake will haunt me for the rest of my life and I want other young women to know that when they have unprotected sex they are dicing with their future and their fertility.
‘My dreams have been destroyed because of something that happened five years ago but I want to talk about it to stop it happening to anyone else.’
Ms Watson thought she was being sensible when she protected herself against pregnancy before sleeping with a partner when she was 16.
But after going for an STI test she was told she had contracted chlamydia. She was treated with antibiotics and put it behind her.
She says: ‘I’d learned a horrible lesson at a young age, but what young woman doesn’t make mistakes?
‘I put it behind me and vowed it would never happen again.’
But Ms Watson was unaware that the damage had already been done.
It wasn’t until she met James Jackson through her work in a care home, that she was to discover just how much her life had been affected by one mistake.
The couple quickly became serious and Mr Jackson proposed.
When they moved into their own home in Hartlepool, County Durham, the couple started trying for a baby.
But after a year with no joy Jodie saw her GP in April 2012.
Blood tests came back normal so she was referred to a gynaecologist in June 2012.
She underwent a series of ultrasounds and X-rays in October 2012, which revealed blockages in her tubes.
Ms Watson said: ‘I was stunned when they told us what they had found, but was not prepared at all when they said it was usually caused by chlamydia. I hadn’t even told James about it because it had happened so long ago, I thought it was in the past.’
But now it was affecting her future dreams of motherhood and Ms Watson was told she was infertile.
‘I broke down and cried. I just couldn’t believe it. I was ashamed, embarrassed and shocked.
‘I thought because I had been treated I would be fine but the consultant said the damage had likely already been done. I had no idea.’
Their only hope of a family lies in IVF but as Mr Jackson had a daughter with an ex-partner the couple do not qualify for treatment on the NHS.
After being dealt the bombshell Ms Watson suffered with depression.
She said: ‘I was just blaming myself every day and wishing I could turn back the clock.’
After researching her condition she read about an operation, which could help to unblock her tubes and increase her chances of becoming pregnant.
Her GP explained there was just a 15 per cent chance it would work but gave the go ahead.
Ms Watson underwent the operation in January this year but has still not become pregnant.

Pomegranates Can Protect The Heart From A High Cholesterol Diet By 'Strengthening The Arteries'

Do you know that Pomegranates could reverse some of the damage done by junk food, research suggests.
A supplement made from the fruit helped keep blood vessels healthy, a key step in keeping heart attacks and strokes at bay.

In the first study of its kind, Spanish researchers looked at the effect of a pill packed with pomegranate plant chemicals called polyphenols on the circulation of pigs.
Pigs were chosen because their cardiovascular system is similar to ours.

Not surprisingly, feeding them fatty food damaged their blood vessels and, in particular, their delicate lining.
This lining, or endothelium, is important as it releases substances that control the expansion and contraction of blood vessels.

Damage to it can be a first step in atherosclerosis – the hardening of the arteries that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
The blood vessels of the pigs fed fatty food were less elastic. The animals also made less nitric oxide, a blood vessel widening-gas and had other signs of heart problems.

However, a daily dose of Pomanex, a supplement with 200mg of polyphenols called punicalagins, cancelled out many of the effects, the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology heard.
Researcher Dr Lina Badimon, of the Catalan Institute for Cardiovascular Sciences in Spain, said: ‘Enriching a diet with pomegranate polyphenols can help in preventing and retarding endothelial dysfunctions, which are among the first signs of atherosclerosis and strokes.’

'I didn't know I was pregnant until I gave birth on the bathroom floor': Size 10 Woman Delivers Her Own Baby While oblivious Partner Sleeps Through Her Screams

A pregnant mother who didn't realise she was expecting gave birth on her bathroom floor in the middle of the night - while her partner slept through it all.
Nadia Watson, 22, of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, woke up suffering from what she thought were period pains but collapsed to the floor and went into labour.
She screamed in agony for more than an hour as she delivered 7lbs 11oz baby Poppy by herself.

But boyfriend Lewis McSweeney didn't wake up - even though she shrieked so loudly her concerned neighbours dialled 999.
A fleet of police cars and ambulances arrived minutes after the birth and Lewis, also 22, only arose from his slumber when Nadia presented their newborn daughter.
Nadia said: 'He can literally sleep through anything - fire alarms, the lot. I have no idea how he does it.

She had two retail jobs - at Frankie and Benny's restaurant and Blockbuster video - and would even help her pregnant neighbour carry her shopping.
'It was a complete surprise - I didn't have a clue that I was pregnant,' she said.
'I was still having regular periods, I remained a size ten, and I only put on a tiny bit of weight which I put down to eating too many burgers at my new job at Frankie and Benny's.
'On the Sunday night I started having some sharp pains, which I just assumed was me starting my period.
'I went to the bathroom and collapsed with pain. I realised I was in labour and just decided to keep pushing.
'Most people have a team of people around them telling them what to do and when but I just had to keep pushing on my own.'
Boyfriend Lewis remained completely oblivious as to what was going on in the next room  - despite Nadia screaming so loudly the neighbours called the police.
She added: 'Lewis just slept through the whole thing but I did manage to wake the neighbours. I was screaming so loudly that they called 999.
'By the time Lewis had woken up two police cars arrived with three paramedics, so they cut the cord and took us both to hospital.'
Baby Poppy was aptly named due to her arrival on Remembrance Sunday last year.
'When Poppy was born she was completely silent which absolutely terrified me but then she wiggled and I was just completely relieved,' said Nadia.
'Even now she's still really well behaved, she sleeps right through the night and she's a very calm little baby. '
New dad Lewis McSweeney said he was 'quite embarrassed' to have slept through his daughter's birth - but he was exhausted from working night shifts.
He said: 'I'm actually quite embarrassed and a little bit gutted at the fact I managed to sleep through the whole thing.
'It's really not unusual for me to sleep through things - I once left a pizza in the oven for more than an hour and didn't wake up to the fire alarm or the neighbours trying to get into the house.
'I had also just finished a 12 hour night shift as a support worker so I was pretty knackered.
'The first thing I knew about Nadia giving birth was when she walked into the room with Poppy in her arms and the chord still attached.
'I thought I was dreaming so I put my head back down and went to sleep but then the penny dropped as to what had happened.
'I was in complete shock for days - I couldn't get my head around what had happened.
'I'd been to have my hair cut the same day and the barber there had just got his misses pregnant.
'I was laughing a bit and telling him that I wouldn't be becoming a Dad for at least 10 years, then less than 12 hours later I had a baby.'

His partner Nadia Watson said she had no idea she was pregnant and the only symptom was back ache which she put down to juggling two jobs.
She said: 'I think on reflection I was really lucky with my pregnancy - I didn't have any of the usual symptoms and managed to get away with it quite lightly.
'Looking back the only symptom I did have was bad back pains, but I just assumed that it was because I was working two jobs - both of which involved me being on my feet all day.
'One of my friends is pregnant now and she is really suffering with it, so I'm definitely extremely lucky.'

Nadia added that she remembers very little about the labour.
She said: 'I know I went into labour in the early hours of the morning on Remembrance Sunday but in all honesty I really couldn't tell you much about it - it seemed to happen so quickly.
'I think the labour lasted about an hour, it was definitely no more than two, it was very quick in comparison to some people.
'I know the ambulance turned up and cut the cord at about 7.15 but other than that I haven't really got a clue about timings.
'I was in so much pain I couldn't get up to go and get my phone to check the time or call for help.
'It's a bit sad really that I don't actually know what time Poppy was born.'
