Keshi Seeks For Okpalla's Reinstatement

Stephen Keshi insists he wants no other assistant other than Sylvanus Okpalla  former assistant coach of the Super Eagles who was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation after the Eagles won the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Okpalla, an ex-international was disengaged after the Nations Cup in South Africa. Then, NFF said it was due to the large backroom staff they had and that they needed to downsize. Just recently when Keshi insisted on the recall of Okpalla the reason changed to ‘’gross insubordination’’.
As the NFF seeks to employ an assistant coach that would add value to the Eagles bench during the Brazil World Cup, embattled Keshi insists that he wants Okpalla re-instated.
But a member of the Technical Committee, Paul Bassey stated yesterday that the issue of Okpalla coming back to the Eagles had been closed.
‘’The issue of Okpalla is closed because he was sacked for insubordination”, Bassey, an accomplished Journalist and a member of CAF and FIFA media Committee said.
When asked what the insubordination was that made them sack Okpalla? “Okpalla was said to have reported NFF President Aminu Maigari to the then Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Dr Patrick Ekeji and the Board did not like that one bit’’, Bassey retorted without explaining why and what made Okpalla report Maigari to Ekeji.
It was learned that Okpalla told Ekeji that their bonuses and allowances had been slashed without reason. Ekeji felt that such actions could jeopardise Nigeria’s chances of winning the Nations Cup and directed NFF to restore their allowances. Maigari took offence and has not forgiven Okpalla since then.

Super Eagles Ready To Play Morroco On Saturday

Morocco last night set up a quarterfinal match with the Super Eagles at the ongoing CHAN after beating Uganda 3-1 at the Cape Town Stadium to top Group B.
In the match the Moroccans played a fast-paced game to dazzle their Ugandan foes, who found it tough coping with the attacking play of the North Africans, who will be difficult proposition for the Super Eagles, who Sunday qualified for the first knockout stage after emerging second in Group.
Meanwhile, despite Super Eagles outstanding display against Bafana Bafana in their final group game on Sunday night, Head Coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, says the team is still work in progress but expressed happiness that the players are finally playing to his instructions.

Olympic Medalist Louis Smith Revals Torso, As He Is Back On Training

He piled on the pounds after gorging on pizza and Chinese takeaways following his Olympic success in 2012.
But Louis Smith proved he was well and truly back to his buff best as he got to work in the gym for a gruelling training session this week.
The silver medal-winning gymnast displayed the fruits of his labour as he went shirtless during an intense Tabata workout at Fusion Gym in central London.
Showing off his toned torso and bulging biceps, the Peterborough-born sportsman looked as though he was well on the way to being back on form.
Working out under the watchful eye of his personal trainer Lisa Welham, the former Strictly Come Dancing winner stripped down to just a pair of white shorts as he tried his hand at the Japanese high-intensity workout regime.
Concentrating on his moves with precision, the Olympic hero was deep in thought as he rehearsed his moves and pushed his stamina to the brink

Christiano Ronaldo is World Footballer of the Year!

Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo ended the four-year dominance of Lionel Messi when he was awarded the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or in Zurich on Monday.
The tearful 28-year-old Real Madrid and Portugal star, who won the award in 2008, had been the overwhelming favourite to pip Barcelona and Argentina wonder Messi, winner the previous four years, and France’s Franck Ribery, who claimed the treble with Bayern Munich in 2013.
Ronaldo won with 27.99% of the votes ahead of Messi (24.72%) while Ribery was third (23.36%) according to France Football, co-organisers of the award with FIFA.
“There are no words to describe how I feel,” said Ronaldo.
“I’m delighted, I want to thank all my team-mates, all my family in the room.
“Those who know me know how many sacrifices I made to win this reward.
“I want to thank all those who had faith in me and I want to speak again about (recently deceased Portugal legend) Eusebio and (recently deceased former South Africa president) Madiba (Nelson Mandela) and to pay tribute to them one last time.”
“Without doubt I deserved this, Messi and Ribery would have also deserved it.
“Each time is different. But I would say that this second Ballon d’Or is more emotional, because my mother and my son (who joined him on stage) are here.”
Real president Florentino Perez paid tribute to Ronaldo.
“The only thing I wish to say is that this Ballon d’Or is justified to be for Cristiano Ronaldo, it is recognition of hard work, talent, and a desire to win daily.”
News of Ronaldo’s success filtered through from France Football just moments before the official announcement in Zurich.
C.Ronaldo, who was widely expected to win after news spread on social media earlier in the day that seven members of his family were joining him in Zurich and his club Real were transmitting the award ceremony live on their official television channel in a change to the programmed schedule, broke down in tears on stage during his victory speech.
Ribery, who won the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup with Bayern last season, before adding the European Supercup and Club World Cup before the turn of the year, had been the early front-runner.

Keshi, Ethiopian Coach Give CAF Award To Mikel

Stephen Okechukwu Keshi Super Eagles coach, and his Ethiopian counterpart, Sewnet Bishaw have thrown their weights behind Nigeria’s midfield maestro, Mikel Obi of Chelsea winning the coveted African Player of The Year Award. Both coaches who clashed again weekend in Abuja in a friendly won by Keshi’s boys 2-1 believe time has come for Nigeria to reclaim her glory in African football with one of her players winning the award. The awards are scheduled for Lagos, Nigeria this week.
Bishaw spoke first in his native Ethiopia. “Nigeria was obviously the best football nation in Africa last year and I won’t be surprised if a player from the country emerges the player of the year. They deserve to get the award. I also wish this beautiful stadium is somewhere in Addis Ababa”, he said smiling.
But Keshi believes after waiting this long, it was time for a Nigerian to win the African Footballer of the Year Crown. He said he is rooting for John Mikel Obi to emerge the best among the pack. “It will boost the team and Mikel and all Nigerians because it has been a long time since we last won the award and I know we deserve to win this year”, he said.
Keshi is also nominated in the African Coach of the Year category but revealed his fingers are crossed even though it will be a great honour to be named the best coach on the continent. Keshi who is favoured for the award may not depart with the national team to South Africa tomorrow evening.

Kenya Requests Friendly Match With Super Eagles

Kenya Football Federation (KFF) have written the Nigeria Football Federation requesting a friendly  match between the Harambee Stars and the World Cup-bound Super Eagles on March 5 in London.
It was gathered that the KFF request may not see the light of day as the NFF are shopping to play a tougher opponent on that day as it is the only FIFA-free window before the World Cup in Brazil.
Kenya were forced to a 1-1 draw by hosts Nigeria in a 2014 World Cup qualifier earlier this year, before the Eagles beat them 1-0 in Nairobi in a reverse fixture.
However, officials have expressed doubts over the possibility of this match going ahead.
“I am not sure this can work even though we would have loved to honour it. We would be preparing for the World Cup and it’s only right we play countries with similar football culture in our group at the World Cup,” a top NFF official said.
Nigeria are drawn against Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in the first round of Brazil 2014.

Nelson Mandela's Regret

According to the Madiba, Nelson Mandela: “There is one regret that I have had all my life – that I never become the heavy weight boxing champion of the world.”
Nelson Mandela grew up with a love for sport. He was an ardent boxer in his younger days and used it to keep fit.
Look, it is the nature of sport generally – and boxing in particular – that you will have trials and reversals.”
After Madiba’s release from Robben Island, he set out, in his own unique way, to unite a nation through sport.
Ali Bacher (Former Cricket Administrator): “He was the first person to realise the importance of sport, particularly in our divided country, of bringing black and white people together.”
1995 found the new South Africa struggling to find a way to cross the racial divide.
In Sport, Rugby was predominantly supported by whites, with black South Africans rallying behind soccer.
When the Springboks played in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, Madiba saw a golden opportunity to reach out to the Afrikaner, and took it, says Ali Bacher, a former cricketer and sports administrator,  “You remember 1995, the Rugby World Cup? Three weeks before the final he went public to support our rugby team wearing the Springbok jersey, to support the Springbok emblem.”
But this was not an easy road to walk for Madiba. Even in the ANC, not everyone supported the idea. Undeterred, Madiba went for a try and scored, says football administrator Danny Jordaan, CEO WC 2010 FIFA Local Organising Committee: “We sat in his house in Houghton at that time and he said, ‘Listen, first of all, tell me why you don’t want the Springbok emblem, but I think you will all agree with me that when it comes to apartheid, there is not a single one here in the room who could tell me about apartheid and the horrors of apartheid.’ And then he paused a moment, and, of course, we said nothing. And then he said, ‘Okay, fine, you agree with me, now tell me why you don’t want the Springbok, without referring to apartheid.’ Of course we had no argument.”

India to host 2017 Under-17 World Cup – FIFA

FIFA president Sepp Blatter confirmed Thursday that India will host the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
Eight venues have been shortlisted to be pared down to six — Goa, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Cochin, Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.
The news was greeted with elation among Indian officials
“This is historic, this is what we have been waiting for,” said Praful Patel, president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
“FIFA has been extremely supportive of All India Football Federation’s ambitions and taking Indian Football to the world level,” said Patel.
“Both FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and FIFA Secretary General Mr Jerome Valcke have always been huge supporters of Indian Football.”
Patel also thanked the Indian government for providing “the necessary guarantees” and told the AIFF website the move could revolutionise the game on the Indian sub-continent.
“Hosting a tournament of such a stature will also help galvanise the face of Indian Football among the masses and youth of the country.
“At the moment, football is popular in certain pockets in India. With the U-17 World Cup taking place, I strongly believe that the popularity will swell overnight and the mission of making football a pan-India sport will be realised,” Patel said.
AIFF general secretary Kushal Das added: “I cannot sum it up in words what this means to Indian Football,” as he expressed gratitude to the government, FIFA and Patel.
In all, 24 teams will take part.
China hosted the first U-17 event in 1985.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are defending champions after winning the last event in the United Arab Emirates last month
Chile will be the next hosts in 2015.

Yaya Toure Beats Mikel Obi, Moses And Others At BBC Award

Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure was named the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year for 2013 on Monday.
It was the fifth straight year the Manchester City star had made the shortlist but the first time he’d taken the award.
“Thank you to all the fans around the world who continue to support me and who love me a lot,” said Yaya Toure in a BBC statement. “I’m very proud, I’m very happy, this award is amazing".
“It’s the fifth time in a row (being nominated) and this time is very special.”
Toure, who has scored 13 goals for club and country this year, was the choice of the BBC’s global audience.
He held off competition from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon and Borussia Dortmund), Victor Moses (Nigeria and Liverpool, on loan from Chelsea), John Obi Mikel (Nigeria and Chelsea), and Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkina Faso and Rennes).
“We are pleased for Yaya Toure that he has finally won the BBC African Footballer of the Year on his fifth nomination for the award,” said BBC Africa’s current affairs editor Vera Kwakofi.
“This shows the high esteem in which he is held by lovers of African football and the respect the fans have for his exploits for club and country.”
Toure now has the chance to complete an awards double having been selected among a 25-man shortlist for the African Football Confederation (CAF) African Footballer of the Year for 2013.
In contrast to the BBC award, Toure has won the CAF equivalent in each of the last two years and winning it for a third consecutive year would see him match the achievement of Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o, winner in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The winner of the latest edition is due to be announced at a ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, on January 9.

Two Dead In Brazil World Cup Stadium Accident

Two people were killed and another injured Wednesday by the collapse of a crane on the site of a Sao Paulo stadium that will host the opening game of next year’s World Cup, authorities said.
“The initial toll of three has been revised downward to two and one injured person was rushed to hospital,” a police spokesman told AFP.
Police said a crane fell on workers rushing to complete the Arena Corinthians stadium, where the opening World Cup match is to be held next June.
The world football’s governing body FIFA set a December 31 deadline for finishing the work.
The crane collapsed as it was lifting a 500-ton lattice structure to the top of the stands, bringing down three metal structures, Globo television reported.
The company overseeing the construction work immediately seized work and said it would investigate.
The stadium is one of 12 World Cup venues and Brazil has been struggling to overhaul sagging infrastructure in time for the games.

12 Die Celebrating Algeria's world Cup Qualification

Celebrations for Algeria’s victory over Burkina Faso that sent the country’s soccer team to the 2014 World Cup finals left 12 people dead and some 240 injured, authorities reported Wednesday.
People poured into the streets of this soccer-mad country late Tuesday after the game and most of the deaths and injuries appear to be from road accidents as cars raced around honking their horns in on.
The statement from emergency services said five celebrating fans were killed when their van slid off the road into a ravine in the mountain town of Bejaia, east of Algiers, while four others died in the southern city of Biskra when two trucks collided.A 10-year-old was killed in the town of Bouira, also east of the capital, just after midnight when the vehicle he was traveling in drove off the road. Eight other passengers, including four children between the ages of 3 and 8, were also injured, said the state news agency.
The remaining two deaths occurred in the towns of Tipaza and M’Sila, the statement added without further details. Much of the north of the country was blanketed with heavy rains Tuesday, making road conditions dangerous.
It is the fourth trip to the World Cup for this soccer-mad nation and follows closely on its 2010 appearance in South Africa.
Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and other members of the government lunched with the victorious team on Wednesday. The absence of ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was noted as another sign of his increasing infirmity following a stroke in April.
The 76-year-old president was nominated by his party Saturday to run for a fourth term.

Nigeria Golden Eaglet Makes History.

Wow!! what a blast: The relentless  Nigeria Golden Eaglets came out top in the FIFA U-17 World Cup history with a 3-nil win over  Mexico at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The final was a rematch of the 6-1 win Nigeria inflicted on the Mexicans in Group F play and sees the Golden Eaglets lay hands on the junior world trophy for the fourth time in their history, one better than South American giants Brazil. When the final whistle blew, players and fans of the golden eaglet rejoiced for the victory.

Golden Eaglets WIns 4-1 against Iran

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets beat Iran 4 – 1 in a round of 16 match  at the Kalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain City Tuesday.
Three-time champions Nigeria had no trouble today with Iran  racking up three goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 scoreline. The result sets up a quarter-final date for the Nigerians with Uruguay, a game in which they will likely be missing two of their best attackers – Kalechi Iheanacho and Success Isaac – through injury.
Iheanacho, who scored four goals in the opener on this very pitch, fired a vicious shot from the corner of the penalty area inside the first minute that only just flew over the bar. It wasn’t long after that Chidiebere Nwakali raced through midfield on the end of an elegant heel flick from Zaharaddeen Bello. His shot from way out, however, also went over the goal.
The pressure was mounting on Iran, who’d been so sturdy up to this point in the competition.
Nigeria were attacking and crossing dangerously, but the storm subsided and Iran began to get some touches on the ball. And when Nwakali tried to dribble the ball out of defence, he was stripped by Mohammad Bazaj, whose effort from a tight angle after 21 minutes was the Iranian’s first chance of the half.
All that did was make the Nigerians angry. The Eaglets were into the lead just seconds later when Musa Yahaya pulled off an outrageous move to leave his man for dead at the edge of the penalty area. He sent in a low diagonal ball to Samuel Okon, who sliced in from a tight angle. Two minutes later it was 2-0 for the Africans. Taiwo Awoniyi, on for the injured Success Isaac, pulled the ball across the 18-yard line for Iheanacho, who dispatched his fifth goal of the tournament. It would be the impressive No10’s last action, as he pulled his hamstring shortly after and signaled for a substitute.
Captain Musa Muhammed grabbed a third goal for Nigeria five minutes from the interval, taking advantage of some slack marking to burst into the area and score to make it 3-0 at the break.
The second half lacked the total attacking sparkle of the first, but the Nigerians remained in full control. In the 78th minute, Yahaya dropped his shoulder brilliantly again – pulling out his signature move – before firing low into the corner from 25 yards. Iran managed a consolation goal six minutes from time. Substitute Ali Gholizadeh scored from the edge of the box with the Nigerian defenders suffering from a bit of understandable complacency. It was clearly too little too late for Iran though, as Nigeria’s dominant performance will likely send a chill up the spine of Uruguay, who they will meet in the last eight.

Golden Eaglets advance into second round

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets on Friday ended their Group F campaign with a 5-0 whipping of Iraq to advancing to the second round of the ongoing 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The Nigerian side won in style to finish top of their group ahead of rivals Mexico in their match at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai, in the competition holding at UAE.
Mexico and Sweden also go through to the Round of 16 from the group in second and third places respectively.
Chidiebere Nwakali hit the woodwork after only two minutes, and it was a hint of things to come as the Nigerian side roared into incredible form.
Some seconds later, they took the lead when Musa Yahaya was fouled in the area and Musa Muhammed converted from the penalty spot.
The scorer turned provider a minute later, with his cross picking out Nwakali who had enough time and space to put the ball away from close range.
Nigeria were 3-0 after 18 minutes, when Kelechi Iheanacho laid on a fine pass for Taiwo Awoniyi, but which fell at the feet of Yahaya.
In the 41st minute, Yahaya took advantage of a rather grand error by the Iraqi goalkeeper, Hayder Mohammed, to poke home with ease from six yards out just before the half time.
On the stroke of full-time, Nigeria scored their fifth when substitute Chigozi Obasi hit home from 20 yards to take their goals tally in the group stages to 14.(NAN)

FIFA Fines Liberia $6,700 Over Use Of Suspended Player

FIFA on Thursday sanctioned Liberia for fielding a suspended player during a World Cup qualifier, but the penalty had no impact as they had already failed to earn a berth in Brazil.

According to FIFA, Liberia was guilty of playing goalkeeper Nathaniel Sherman in their match against Angola on September 7.
Sherman should have been sidelined because he had picked up two cautions in previous games, leading to an automatic one-match suspension, FIFA said.
The decision to count the game as a 3-0 defeat for Liberia has no impact on the standings in Group J of the African qualifiers, given that Angola had won the match 4-1.
Neither teams had a chance of advancing to round three of the qualifiers after Senegal finished four points clear of Uganda at the top of the group.
FIFA also fined Liberia 6,000 Swiss francs (4,870 euros, $6,700)
