Relatives of the victims of the September 11 tragedy gathered at ground zero in New York City today to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the attack that killed almost 3,000 people. At 8:46 a.m. a moment of silence was observed to mark when the first plane hit the twin towers on a clear, sunny day in 2001. 
 
Mija Quigley of Princeton Junction, New Jersey,was among those who attended to show their respect.
Mija embraced her son's name Patrick Quigley who died on 9/11, main image, and Carrie Bergonia, bottom left, who lost her fiance firefighter Joseph Ogren.
In Washington, President Obama marked the 12th anniversary of the attacks with a moment of silence along with the first lady and vice president on the South Lawn of the White House, top right. 

He also laid a wreath at the Pentagon to mark the moment that Flight 77 hit the building. In Pennsylvania bells were rung and names of passengers and crew members were read at the Flight 93 National Memorial.
