Monday, 17 February 2014
As the incessant attacks by terrorist group Boko haram continues in the north,Governors of theof the nineteen northern states today met in Kaduna where they extensively discussed in the security situation in the north calling the federal government to deploy security personnel to the north.
The chairman of the forum and governor of Niger state, Dr Babangida Aliyu who read out a communique at the end of the meeting, governors urged Nigerians to see the security challenges in the region as a collective battle.
He therefore urged the federal government to adopt measures to boost the morale of security personnel to enable them effectively fight the terrorists.
“The situation has gone beyond the normal pattern that we gave to Boko Haram and I think we need to really appreciate the gravity of the situation,” he stressed.
He decried the spate of attacks in the northern region, particularly in Borno and other north eastern states, emphasizing on the need for the Federal Government to take measures to curtail it.
“But it appears that we are becoming a little callous that we don’t seem to care much about what is happening. We must continue to encourage the federal government to really do what it is supposed to do.
“And we must take a position so that we create, if it is lack of political will on our part, we must create that political will so that from our own political will, it transcends to the federal government and to the people of Nigeria.”
According to him, the forum would also discuss ways to coordinate and regulate the operation of cattle dealers, cattle traders’ and abattoir operation as well as agriculture and the activities of nomadic herdsmen.
